1997-1999
BA (Hons.) Design/Illustration
Created during my BA (Hons) studies, these sculptures mark the beginning of a lifelong exploration of identity, memory and transformation. Through symbolic imagery and carefully crafted forms, I sought to give visual expression to experiences that are often difficult to articulate in words. Although created many years ago, these works reveal themes that continue to underpin my practice today: beauty, vulnerability, belonging and the human need to make meaning from experience.
2007-2015
PhD, Researching and Developing Portrait Therapy
Developed as part of my PhD research, Portrait Therapy investigated how portrait painting can contribute to identity revisioning in the context of life-limiting illness. Through collaborative portrait-making, participants were offered an opportunity to see themselves represented through images that reflected their strengths, relationships and personal histories. Themes that continue to inform my practice today—identity, belonging, beauty and transformation—first emerged through this work.

Handle with care series
For my PhD project I also created this series of sculptures as a response to stories of self-identity told to me by the patient-participants. I used familiar materials to make these sculptures, pins, paper and cardboard ...

2003-2007
In conversation with the masters ...
These paintings were created as studies of artists whose work has influenced my own development. Through engaging directly with the visual languages of painters such as Gustav Klimt, I explored colour, symbolism, composition and technique, including the application of gold leaf and decorative surface treatments.
For me, these works were not simply exercises in style, but opportunities to understand how materials can contribute to meaning. The use of gold introduced ideas of preciousness, transcendence and transformation that continue to resonate throughout my practice today.

2014-2026
Painting en plein air
Over the past 12 years painting en plein air has become an important part of my practice. Working directly from the landscape invites a different way of seeing - one that requires stillness, attention and a willingness to be fully present to the fleeting qualities of light, atmosphere and place.
Although these works differ from my portrait and figurative projects, they are connected by the same underlying themes that run throughout my practice. Much of my work explores identity, belonging, memory and the search for meaning. In the seascape paintings these concerns emerge through a relationship with place itself, and the landscapes I paint are often locations that hold personal significance, carrying traces of history, memory and lived experience.
